At Balmain Natural Therapies we provide specialist acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments for couples wanting to conceive. Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of helping couples to conceive and this awareness is now widespread all over the world. Acupuncture can help to maximise your chances of falling pregnant both naturally or with IVF.

Who can we help?

  • Couples given an "unexplained infertility" or "functional infertility"- In reality many couples given unexplained reasons for not conceiving are not clinically infertile, they may simply not be in emotional or physical reproductive balance. Chinese Medicine helps to address this imbalance with skilful diagnosis and treatment plans to regulate your hormones to maximise your chances of falling pregnant.
  • Couples having difficulties who want to conceive naturally before trying IVF - This can be the result of female or male factors. PCOS, Endometriosis, Premature Ovarian Faliure, Abnormal or Low Sperm count and motility,
  • Couples wanting to maximise there chances with IVF, ICSI, - For couples going through IVF we provide preparatory treatments to help address any imbalances and strengthen your bodies to get the best possible outcomes. We provide treatments before you start your cycles which can help to increase the blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. This helps to improve the quality and quantity of follicles produced by the ovaries, and increase the endometrial lining thickness, which aids in better chances of implantation. We also provide before and after acupuncture treatments for any procedures such as egg pickups and embryo transfers, which research has been found to increase implantation and pregnancy.

How we can help

We make individual diagnosis, check your medical history including any blood tests and ultrasounds or request these if necessary, check any current BBT charts (see below for more information). Check your tongue and pulse and provide any necessary lifestyle and dietary advice (we also have a naturopath that can help). We provide acupuncture with all consultations and weekly herbal medicine prescriptions. Apart from that we are open ears and want to hear from you and how you are going. We understand it can be a difficult and anxious time for couples, and we are here to provide you with a great deal of care!.

BBT Charts

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) charting is a very useful and important diagnostic tool to help us understand the regularity of your hormones, when your ovulation occurred and how short or long your follicular and luteal phases are. All this information is used in helping us make a diagnosis, and to assist you to fall pregnant. It is a great tool for women also as you get to know your cycle, to understand the changes that occurs and know when you are actually ovulating.

A full explanation of BBT charting is given at your consultations.

It is recommended that all women wanting to come to Chinese Medicine treatments for fertility start recording thier BBT readings daily as soon as they can. This helps get some background information on what is going on.

How to record your BBT

Basal body temperature (BBT) is the temperature of your body at rest. It is taken first thing in the morning, preferably after a good nights sleep (at least 4 hours) at the same time each day, by placing a thermometer under your tongue and reading the temperature after 3-5mins. You must limit your movement and talking before doing this. Your temperatures are recorded on a BBT chart every day over your cycle.

You can print a BBT chart here.

What you see on a BBT Chart

A monthy cycle shows on the BBT chart as two distinct phases;

Follicular Phase - starts from day 1 of your cycle (when menstruation occurs) to ovulation, for a 28 cycle this can be around day 14/15. Temperatures typically fall in the range of 36.1 to 36.5 averaging 36.3-36.4 degrees celsius.

Luteal Phase - a rise of around 0.3- 0.4 degree celcius from the average temperatures in the follicular phase indicates ovulation has started and is the start of the luteal phase. Temperatures here are typically higher and more stable than the follicular phase. This phase lasts between 10-14 days, ending with a drop in temperature when menstruation starts.

Of course not all women have typical cycles, Any variations from typical BBT patterns is where Chinese Medicine at Balmain Natural Therapies can help, to regulate your hormones and hence your cycles and maximise your chances of falling pregnant.

You can also put on the chart changes such cervical mucous secretions, breast or abdomen tenderness, days of intercourse and other S/S such as headaches, PMT etc. All this complementary information is to provide you with your individual profile to help you and your practitioner correlate what is going on in your body, enabling a concise treatment plan to maximise your chances of falling pregnant.
